A Satellite Exhibition at the Historic Avenue Cultural Center
Remembering the Avenue is a civic practice exhibition curated through Alabama Contemporary’s Guest Curator Program that enlists the local community in mapping the history, legacy, and possible futures for historic Davis Avenue.
Davis Avenue, now named Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, in the 1940s-1970s was ‘Black Main Street” – a hub of black-owned businesses and venues, a walkable and tight-knit community with dense activity. Urban Renewal in the 1970s bisected the community and removed more than half of the businesses and resources on The Avenue. Remembering the Avenue is an exhibition that will explore not only the history and shared memory of a once thriving community, but seed the potential for new growth and possibility through shared dreaming.
This exhibition as part of Alabama Contemporary Art Center’s Guest Curator Program, will be mounted at The Historic Avenue Cultural Center, the newly renovated African American Archives Building and old “Black Library,” in partnership with the Mobile County Commission.
Remembering the Avenue is now on view at The Historic Avenue Cultural Center at 564 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Ave.
