Sub Atomic Flower Workshop

Sally Heller is an artist whose process is formulating objects out of bits and pieces of detritus and low-end consumer goods. Her work involves putting together unrelated materials from our daily lives to create something unfamiliar and fantastical. For many years she has worked with recycled plastic from broken toys to plastic plates to wiffle balls. Large scale environments, like Ex-Tabula Rasa currently on view at ACAC, are created from these throw-away materials that one can walk through and examine the unusual equations that are along the path…i.e: a tree made from cut up plastic laundry baskets or a beaded branch with foam leaves or a real tree growing out of a box.

In this workshop we will imagine that plastic has taken over our nature and is growing through the cracks in the pavement. What will that flower/weed/or “alien thing” look like?

Join us in assembling flora using your own brand of handy-work: twisting, knotting, or weaving small elements into unknown floral-like entities. Materials include: pipe cleaners, scraps of styrofoam, yarn, wiffle balls, beads, needles, thread, wire and other bits.

This workshop, made possible by Mobile Baykeeper‘s Reduce the Use Grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Marine Debris Program, is free for ACAC members and $10 for nonmembers.
