New work by Coulter Fussell

This series of 14 new sculptural quilt-works by Coulter Fussell act as open-ended narrative vessels for stories of personal escape and tales of dream-seeking. The archeology of deciphering donated and trashed textiles for use as her sole materials leads the way in terms of story, but themes recur: the physical labor of Craft, uncovering human connections across time and distance through personal stories and the infinite promise between mother and child. Drawing from a childhood growing up in a river-town that owes its existence to cotton mills, Fussell sews her stories as outfitted rafts and guide-maps — all set to journey on an imagined river rolling through valleys landscaped by the Southern economic fallout’s reign upon the natural world.

Coulter Fussell was born and raised in Columbus, Georgia, an old textile town. She is the youngest quilter in a multi-generational family of seamstresses and quilters. She produces boundary-pushing quilt-works using old, discarded, and donated textiles as her sole materials. Taught to quilt by her mother, Coulter has exhibited works across the country from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art to The Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art in Charleston, South Carolina. As a craftswoman trained only by her mother, Coulter was the Finalist for the 2017 SouthArts Southern Prize, the 2019 Visual Arts Inductee into the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters, and a 2019 United States Artists Fellow in Craft.
