Black River is a series of works by the artist Charles Edward Williams that acts as a composite portrait of the relationship between the artist and his father. Throughout this developing series, Williams uses biblical parables and modern narratives to explore the profound act of forgiveness between father and son.

Photographer Julia Gorton will turn her camera on the Mobile scene and turn a portion of our Video Gallery into an Open Portrait Studio. If you were ever in a band, past or present, a showgoer, promoter, record store owner, bartender, or scene supporter in any way, we invite you to drop by and have your portrait made by Julia. Each portrait will be displayed in January 2024 in the upcoming Hurricane Party exhibition.

Join us at Alabama Contemporary Art Center for a night of spoken word in honor of our current exhibition Black River. Hosted by ACAC’s own Tiffany Pogue, the night will include recitations from local poets and an open mic to follow.

Join us at the Historic Avenue Cultural Center to celebrate the opening of the newest partnership exhibition, Remembering the Avenue. The opening day celebration from 4 to 8 p.m. will include a ribbon cutting, food trucks, music, and festivities. Rev. Milton Saffold will welcome all with an invocation to start the evening, followed by performances by Ancienthangs and Catharsis tha Poet, words from the exhibition curator, Jada Jones and others, while the Excelsior Brass Band provides music throughout the evening.

Memorializing the dead is a sacred act, upon which entire belief systems are structured. Molly Jae Vaughan’s work, begun before most of the online data bases and websites dedicated to Transgender Day of Remembrance were established, raises visibility of the epidemic of violence the trans and gender non-conforming community faces by emphasizing each individual from her chronologically selected list of 42, with complex actions and labor heavy processes. For Vaughan, each individual’s life is worth equal time, whether they were a leader, a star, or simply someone trying to survive on the streets.

Alabama Contemporary Art Center is open every second Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. with entry by donation for Downtown Mobile’s monthly LODA Artwalk, and we almost always have a special visitors, programs, exhibitions, and/or activities to celebrate creative thinking. The Member Bar is also available to our adult members during each Artwalk while they enjoy all artist talks, exhibitions, and programs.
