As part of Hurricane Party, the upcoming exhibition documenting and celebrating the Mobile punk scene, Alabama Contemporary is hosting another pop-up, this time with a visit from internationally-known punk scene photographer Julia Gorton.

Julia Gorton is perhaps best known for her photos of New York’s No Wave scene from 1976-1980, capturing historical moments in punk with the likes of Debbie Harry, Patti Smith, Tom Verlaine, David Byrne, Lydia Lunch, Iggy Pop, James Chance, Richard Hell, Anya Phillips, and many others. Now Julia can be found on the road, documenting scenes in various communities in the US and abroad, holding Open Portrait Sessions to create a moving document of the locals who participate.

During her visit to ACAC, Julia Gorton will turn her camera on the Mobile punk scene and turn a portion of our Video Gallery into an Open Portrait Studio. If you were ever in a band, past or present, a showgoer, promoter, record store owner, bartender, or scene supporter in any way, we invite you to drop by and have your portrait made by Julia. Each portrait will be displayed in January 2024 in the upcoming Hurricane Party exhibition.
